Fat Loss vs Weight Loss, The Simplest Explanation Ever.

Your focusing on the wrong thing. Your goal is not to lose “weight” its to lose “fat”, period.

'“Weight Loss” means losing ANY KIND of weight. This could mean water, muscle, bone tissue, AND fat.

“Fat Loss” refers to losing just one thing, fat.

The problem with defining your goal wrong is that when people chase “weight loss” they measure their progress wrong. In my experience, people start to obsess over the number on the scale. Whereas when you chase “fat loss” you have to find different ways to measure your progress in addition to the scale because it doesn’t tell you your body-fat percentage. To do this you’d typically take before/after photos, you’d base it off of how your clothes feel, off of how you look in the mirror, and more.

For example, to the right, is one of my clients. Between the images is just a 1.2KG difference. Now he obviously hasn’t had the most insane transformation BUT, we can both agree that he looks physically leaner. If all we tried to do was “lose weight” we’d have focused too hard on the scale and we would’ve thought nothing was happening.

I’ve seen this misunderstanding lead people to give up when they are making progress. Its why a lot of you probably haven’t made the physical changes that you want.

My method with all of my clients to make sure we are actually progressing in the right areas is…

  1. Take before photos. Retake them every 4 weeks.

  2. Track your progress in the gym. If you’re getting stronger, but staying at the same weight, chances are you’re losing body-fat and gaining muscle.

  3. Track your food intake, particularly protein. Make sure you’re eating enough protein [how much protein is enough link] each day.

  4. Finally, track your bodyweight daily.

Seriously commit to these actions for the next 12 weeks and I promise that you’ll notice more physical change and progress towards your goals than you did before!
